What is APTET and why is it important?

What is APTET?

APTET or Andhra Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test is conducted at the state level in Andhra Pradesh by the Department of School Education to determine the eligibility of candidates aspiring to become teachers in primary and upper primary schools throughout the state.

The real objective of APTET is to ensure that only skilled and knowledgeable teachers are picked up for teaching the kids in both private and public schools from Class 1 to Class 8.

Who All Can Apply for APTET

In order to be eligible to apply for APTET, an individual should have attained the following educational qualifications:

Paper One: The Candidates who desire to teach Classes 1 to 5 should have done Senior Secondary or its equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks from a recognized board and must have either a Diploma or class 12 equivalent qualification.

Paper Two: The Candidates who desire to teach Classes 6 to 8 must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education.

Besides, a test is allowed for candidates appearing in the final year of the teacher training course but such applicants must complete the course before appointment.

Scheme of APTET

Usually, the APTET includes two papers for the exam:

1. Paper I is for: the candidates willing to be teachers for classes I to V i.e., Paper I is for becoming an Teacher for First to Fifth Class.

Those aspirants who wish to be a teacher of Class 6 to Class 8 should take Paper Two.

Each paper contains 150 multiple-choice questions and the testing takes place online at various centers across the state. There will be no negative marking.

Paper I contains:

  • Child Development and Pedagogy
  • Language I (Telugu most of the time)
  • Language II (English)
  • Mathematics
  • Environmental Studies

Paper-II has:

  • Child development and teaching
  • Language One
  • Language Two
  • Math, and Science or Social Studies, as opted by the candidate.

Qualifying Marks

A candidate shall have to score the following marks to qualify the APTET examination:

  • 60% for General category candidates
  • 50% for Backward class candidates
  • 40% for SC, ST, Physically handicapped candidates

As per the latest rules, a candidate who has qualified the APTET examination will be awarded TET certificate and it will be valid for a lifetime
